Kansas City Defective Products | Food Poisoning | E. coli

Last week, about 15 million pounds of Spaghettios were recalled after an in-house inspection found that a cooker that was supposed to sterilize the food before processing was not working properly. This production error may cause the meat in the can to spoil leading to serious food poisoning illness.

The recall affects the following types of Spaghettios:

• SpaghettiOs with Meatballs, with a product code of U5

• SpaghettiOs A to Z with Meatballs, with a product code of 4N

• SpaghettiOs Fun Shapes with Meatballs (Cars) with the product code KS

The cans were sold nationwide between December 2008 and June 2010. The 14.5 ounce cans have an establishment number of EST 4K and a “use by” date of June 2010 and December 2011 on the bottom of each can, along with the product code.

However, SpagettiOs may not be the only dangerous in your cupboard. A Marie Callender frozen food recall was announced last week after at least eight people contracted Salmonella from eating “Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken and Rice” single serve frozen dinners.  All single-serve packages of these dinners have been recalled, regardless of production date. They establishment number P-45 inside the USDA mark of inspection.

If you have either of these foods in your home, return them to your grocery store for a full refund. Do not eat them.

Today, two ground beef recalls were issued affecting over 40,000 pounds of ground beef. The beef was sold to food service agencies and restaurants in New York and California, and does not affect shoppers in Kansas City.  It was contaminated with an especially dangerous strain of E. coli that can lead to kidney failure.

Every month, thousands of pounds of food are recalled because of the risk of food poisoning, particularly from Salmonella or E. coli.

Symptoms of E. coli food poisoning:

• Severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness.

• Diarrhea, watery at first, but often becoming very bloody.

• Nausea and vomiting

E. coli may lead to kidney failure, severe blood problems and even death.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning:

• Diarrhea

• Fever

• Abdominal cramps

Salmonella may lead to extreme dehydration.  This is especially dangerous for infants and the elderly.
