How a Hip Fracture Affects Motorcycle Accident Victims
While many motorcycle riders take care to prevent head injuries and road rash by wearing helmets and protective clothing, few use any type of gear that protects the hips and pelvic region. As a result, a motorcycle accident can result in a broken hip for the motorcycle rider. The effects of a broken hip can last long into the future. Fortunately, victims may be entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering, lost income, medical costs, and rehabilitation expenses.
Effects of a Broken Hip Following a Motorcycle Crash
A broken hip can affect a victim’s life in many ways. The following are some of the complications and treatments that a victim may face:
- Since the hips are responsible for stabilizing the lower body, a fracture can make it difficult for motorcycle accident victims to walk, jog, or run.
- If the fracture is less severe, the victim will likely have to be off their feet for a period of time. This means that the victim will be unable to return to work for a while.
- If the fracture is more severe, the victim may need to be off their feet for a significant period of time. The victim may also face significant pain in the legs, lower back, and groin area, making it difficult to return to work and conduct activities of daily living even when allowed back on their feet.
- Minor hip fractures that only have one breaking point may in some cases repair on their own without surgery. In many cases, however, injuries ranging from mild to severe are treated with surgery to repair the breaks. The surgeon will re-connect the bones and may use metal hardware to re-stabilize the area.
- Depending on the severity and location of the fractures, the metal hardware may either be left in the patient or must be removed through a second follow up surgery.
- In the most severe cases, bone grafts and more extensive surgical interventions may be required.
- If the fracture involves multiple regions, significant derangement of the bones, and moderate to severe internal bleeding, the victim may face long term pain and other complications relating to the injury. Approximately 60% of victims suffer long-term loss of mobility.
